Moving Your Refrigerator? Follow These 5 Tips

Candice Vasquez

Do you have a refrigerator that you're looking to take with you to your next home? If so, you're likely wondering how you are going to move this bulky appliance successfully. Here are a few moving tips that will help you do it.

Plan To Eat Your Leftovers

One of the challenges of moving a refrigerator is emptying it. You likely have a lot of food in there that would need to be packed or thrown away if you don't eat it, so it is best to come up with a plan to eat what is left in your fridge before you move. Not only will you avoid having to throw away things that you didn't get around to eating, but you'll have fewer temperature-sensitive items to pack up on your moving day.

Defrost The Freezer

If your refrigerator has a freezer attached to it, you likely have some ice that has built up over the years. This is why you need to remember to defrost the refrigerator prior to the move. If not, you'll end up with a refrigerator that is leaking water in the moving truck and can get your boxes wet. It should only take a few hours with the doors open and the power turned off to start melting the ice. Put some towels down to collect melted water so that it doesn't collect on the floor.

Tape The Cord To The Back

The long cord of the refrigerator can break by accident if you are not careful. You'll want to tape the cord to the back of the refrigerator so that it cannot fall to the ground. Wrapping the cord around the refrigerator may not be enough to prevent it from falling down because it's not secured tight enough.

Find An Exit Path

Always figure out how you are going to move the refrigerator out of your home before you move it. Do this by measuring the refrigerator, doorways, and hallways. You may discover that you need to remove doors from their hinges or take railings off walls so that the refrigerator can fit.

Never Put The Refrigerator On Its Side

It's important that you remember to always keep your refrigerator upright during the move. Putting a refrigerator on its side can ruin the compressor since it was never meant to rest in a sideways position. The cooling lines can accidentally get oil inside them, which will damage the refrigerator for good.

About Me
Tips for Moving and Storing Valuables

I lived in the same city with my parents for my entire life, even throughout college. When it was time to move out on my own to begin a new job in another state, I got very frantic and overwhelmed due to my lack of moving knowledge along with the fact that I had lived in the same house for my entire life! Thankfully, my parents were very supportive during this time and gave me many tips for moving and storing items that wouldn't fit in the new studio apartment I was moving into. I know others out there are approaching their first moves and don't have people to rely on for advice, so I decided to create a blog all about moving and storage to share what I learned. I plan to post many useful tips, so come back often!
