3 Essential Packing Tips

Candice Vasquez

One of the hardest parts of moving is actually figuring out how to pack all of your things up so that you can safely transport them to your new home. When it comes to packing things up, there are some tried and true tips that you can utilize.

1. Reduce Clutter

The thing with moving is that you literally have to pack up everything. You can make packing easier by going through your belongings before you pack and being harsh with getting rid of things that you don't need or don't want.

Get rid of unnecessary items and anything that you don't use, or that you don't really like but are still hanging onto for various reasons. You can throw stuff away, sell things, or donate them. Just get rid of them so that you don't have to pack up so much stuff.

2. Start Packing Early

You may feel like you need access to everything in your house, but the truth is there are only a few things that you interact with daily. Spend a few days and pay attention to what you interact with daily. Then, get to work packing up everything else.

For example, your decorations throughout the house look great, but you don't need them for your day-to-day life and can pack them up right away. Your book collection is awesome, but you only need to keep out the books you are reading right now, and you can pack up the rest.

3. Invest in Quality Boxes

It can be tempting to save up all of your delivery boxes and pick up boxes at the store for your belongings, and that can work. However, purchasing uniform boxes in a few standard sizes can make packing easier.

As you pack, you will begin to know how much space you have to work with. As you stack up the boxes in your house before moving day, you will be able to more easily stack things up when the boxes are identical or similar sizes.

Also, splurge on specialty boxes that make moving certain items easier, like boxes designed just for plates and cups and wine glasses or special boxes for your artwork. It is worth investing in boxes that are designed to protect those items.

One of the most important things to realize when it comes to packing up your things for a big move is that you don't have to do it alone. You can have your residential moving company help not just with moving things but with packing as well. You can have them pack specific challenging rooms, such as your kitchen, or you can have them pack up specific difficult items, like artwork. Either way, you have options for assistance when it comes to packing for your next move.

About Me
Tips for Moving and Storing Valuables

I lived in the same city with my parents for my entire life, even throughout college. When it was time to move out on my own to begin a new job in another state, I got very frantic and overwhelmed due to my lack of moving knowledge along with the fact that I had lived in the same house for my entire life! Thankfully, my parents were very supportive during this time and gave me many tips for moving and storing items that wouldn't fit in the new studio apartment I was moving into. I know others out there are approaching their first moves and don't have people to rely on for advice, so I decided to create a blog all about moving and storage to share what I learned. I plan to post many useful tips, so come back often!
